Herbert Stewart or Frank Hall

Performer, Manager and Songwriter

Herbert Stewart, known on the Halls as Frank Hall, wrote many songs, including The Great Mackney's famous "In The Strand."

Hall was born in 1838 and was educated at The Royal Naval College, then he was apprenticed to an architect, but he threw it up and went on the stage. There he got a job at the Adelphi, through a friend of his, Leigh Murray, and did well, he was in the original cast of The Bells when Sir Henry Irving made his astounding success in it. Hall played "Father Walter."

Afterwards he became manager of the Alhambra and produced comic operas there. He also managed the Philharmonic.
